We are in the midst of troubled times. We are seeing a rise in xenophobia, the re-emergence of white supremacy and anti-Semitism, the election of politicians and appointment of public officials who promote anti-immigrant, anti-civil rights, misogynistic, homophobic and discriminatory policies. Under the influence of financing from the gun and pharmaceutical industries, gun violence is ubiquitous and addiction is epidemic. Leadership failures in education have resulted in a school to prison pipeline that has robbed communities of color of a viable future.

In response, social justice movements have attempted to mitigate the damage of racial profiling, gun violence, police brutality, environmental injustice, gender discrimination, and LGBTQ discrimination. The Church has struggled to determine what is effective and what is not; what is helpful and what is not. Our struggle is one of consistency and credibility. Can we live up to the faith that we espouse?

“What then shall we (the Church) do?” Where should we stand in these troubled times? More importantly, how shall we take action? This Conference seeks to give voice to leading edge thinkers, speakers and preachers who are addressing, responding and making a positive impact on these critical issues. The Church must act!
