Bright Spots

Bright spots in dark times…

Liz Gokel and Helena Safarova are making masks for friends, neighbors, and medical personnel to use.

Dear friends,

protective mask

I am offering free protective masks to everyone who must leave the house. I have been sewing dozens and dozens of masks and delivering or shipping. If you need any, please let me know how many. I am using new, washed and ironed, high density 100% cotton double-ply, with ties around the head and neck or a version that adjusts behind the ears. They fit really well around the face for your protection. Washable in hot water.

Be wise, safe, and healthy.
Peace be with you,
Helena

Arianna & Gianna Preston with their mom did sidewalk/driveway drawings for Kay & Claude Kennard. Kay came to the window with both smiles & tears of joy as she motioned for them to come up close so she could see their faces and blow them all a kiss. Claude said it really brightened her day.

News Channel 5 featured our Laura Leanza Preston out delivering laptops and educational materials to her students’ doorsteps since they have not been in the classroom and she was not able to connect with them.

FBC youth and Shaker High senior, Skyler Hurle, has been in contact with the two group homes that bring clients to church for worship and class. They are now watching our worship services on YouTube. Skyler has also dropped off some craft projects for them to do since they are now in their home 24/7.

The group that visits Calvary once a month to serve meals to the hungry continues its mission to provide food for those in need. Now they are taking extra precautions and providing hot takeout meals for those who need them. They hope you can join them to help at Calvary. If you are not able to attend, no worries. Maybe you’d like to donate a food item. If you have any questions or interest in assisting with this ministry, please contact Tina Marr – through the form on the Calvary page.

We can all reach out to others by phone, especially to our members living alone.

If you hear of FBC members doing something special that warms your heart or if you have ideas of how to help one of our church family please let us know below.

Hugs & Smiles

Missing the hugs and smiles from fellow members? Then share your words of encouragement with us. We are putting together a video to be shared during our worship service. Please send in a picture of yourself or those loved ones with whom you are spending this quarantine time together to Laura Preston by Wednesday, April 29. Photos can include a symbol or item of hope, a pet, a drawing or sign, or simply a wave and a smile. Have fun and get creative. If you know someone who might want to participate but needs a little technical help, please reach out to them. We ask that you follow a few suggestions in submitting your photos:
    1. Landscape view only (hold your phone horizontally please)
    2. Ask someone to take the picture rather than taking a selfie, if possible
    3. Keep your messages short (a word or brief phrase)

Family Fun

Family Game Night

Did you miss our game night for all ages? The adults had as much or more fun than the kids. There was a killer game of Monopoly and Pastor Jeff is now a hotel mogul and will probably sporting a new Rolls Royce complete with chauffeur soon.

Family Creation Night Was A Hit!

Creation is the theme for our upcoming Hero Headquarters so we decided we would use that as or Family Night theme. Our night of creating with Minecraft, Legos, and crafts was great.  This Free family night was well attended by several families including kids, parents, aunts, uncles and even grandparents.  A lot of the kids headed straight for the lineup of Xboxes that Carly was able to finagle from work at the Microsoft Store. She had her friend and coworker Natalie Esther there for tech support and moral support. Thanks to Natalie and Microsoft! Carly pulled out all the stops on the snacks with healthy fruit and veggies and not so healthy (but delicious) pizza, chips, and cookies.

Besides the lineup of Xboxes, there were Legos to creations to build and plastic crafts to create. It made a nice diversion when attention spans waned and kids needed a break from mining. Later in the evening we even toured downtown Cleveland Minecraft style through the Rock Hall of Fame, Browns/Cavs/Indians stadiums, Terminal Tower and more all built by Adam and Frank (not in one night). We can’t wait for the next big event!

Use the form below to get notified when the next big event is happening! If you have any suggestions for great family activities you can also suggest them in the form.

MLK Day of Service

MLK Day of Service

OFFERS SERVICE PROJECTS FOR PEOPLE OF ALL AGES AND ABILITIES!

Monday, January 20th, 2020

FBCGC marks Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service with the following program:

Gather in Spahr at 9:00 am.  The program will conclude after lunch at 1:30 pm.

Martin Luther King Day will again be a day when we serve as hosts with friends from Church of the Master in a day ON rather than a day OFF. This day of service was started by Kay and Martin Rolfs Massaglia over ten years ago. Let’s keep this great tradition going! In keeping with Dr. Kings’s dream, the churches will work together bridging lines of age, race, gender, socio-economic status, urban/suburban on projects that benefit the church and beyond. We will not only provide service to others but the most important part of the day is the building of relationships. What a rewarding way to build on the legacy of Dr. King toward racial reconciliation and peace.

We have four different service projects that you can volunteer for this year.

Family Promise

This will be a family-friendly project. The group will form carpools to travel to Family Promise, a transitional housing facility for homeless families. This will be a project engaging with families and assisting kids with a craft and activities.

Open to Age 2 to 92

Leader- Carly Marino

Judson Hymn Sing

The group will travel (after forming carpools) to nearby Judson Park to sing favorite old hymns in the nursing care section. No choir experience needed, just come and enjoy singing as we bring a smile to others.

Open to children to all adults

Leader- Gwen Dyer and Liz Gockel

Lunch Bunch/Kairos Cookies

This group will remain at church to prepare a light lunch for all after the service projects and also bake delicious cookies to be used in the Kairos Cookie Ministry. Clean up after lunch as well.

Open to teens to adults

Leader – Ed Szalay

FBC Service Project

This group will spruce up the church by taking care of church pews and other miscellaneous cleaning.

Open to older teens to adults

Leader – TBD

Sign-up sheets are displayed in Swayze Tower or let us know in which project you would like to participate through the form below. Please consider joining us on this special day.

Thanks!
Annette Szalay
