Stephen Ministries

Stephen Ministries

Stephen Ministers are First Baptist Church members who have received special training to provide individual Christian care to those who are experiencing life challenges such as death, grief, divorce, job loss, etc.  Stephen Ministers have been serving in this caring mission at First Baptist Church since 2002.

Stephen Ministry is confidential and free.

Stephen Ministries is an independent, not-for-profit Christian educational organization founded in 1975 in St. Louis, Missouri. It is named after the disciple Stephen (Acts 6) who was chosen to provide caring ministry to those in need. For more information on Stephen Ministries please visit their website at www.stephenministries.org or www.pbs.org/wnet/religionandethics.

Stephen Ministers are Greeters at both Contemporary and Traditional Services every second Sunday. It’s a great time to ask them any questions and get to know your Stephen Ministers.

“Bear one another’s burdens and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”  Galatians 6:2

Run/Walk for Hunger

Each year we participate in the Run/Walk for Hunger which is the Hunger Network of Greater Cleveland’s signature event taking place each May to raise funds and awareness to fight local hunger in Greater Cleveland.

2017 will mark the 29th Annual Run/Walk for Hunger, and we hope you will join us as we get fit to fight hunger!

WHAT? The Run/Walk for Hunger is a 5K run or walk through Downtown beginning and ending at Great Lakes Science with music, refreshments and entertainment for the entire family. The Hunger Network has partnered with Hermes Cleveland to create a professional run experience for participants that will include shutting down the streets of Downtown Cleveland for a scenic route that all runners and walkers will enjoy.

WHEN? The Run/Walk for Hunger will take place on Saturday, May, 13, 2017 at the Great Lakes Science Center. Late Registration opens at 8:15 a.m. Our Run/Walk for Hunger Kick-Off Celebration hosted by Cleveland 19 News begins at 9:00 AM with breakfast, entertainment and more!

WHY RUN/WALK? The Hunger Network distributes over 75% of the emergency food in Greater Cleveland. Over 60,000 people receive emergency food at one of the Network’s hunger centers and hot meal sites each month and 41% of those served are children. Every $1 raised at the Run/Walk for Hunger can be leveraged to provide 4 nutritious meals to feed those in need!

OUR PARTICIPANTS Over 2,000 individual walkers and teams of 10 or more participate each year to help raise money in an effort to stomp out hunger right here in Greater Cleveland. Walkers who raise $30 or more earn an official Run/Walk for Hunger T-Shirt. Prizes will be awarded to top fundraiser teams, individuals and fastest runners.

PARTICIPATE! To participate in the 29th Annual Run/Walk for Hunger, volunteer, walk or run on our team contact Karen Gill through the form below.

The mission of the Hunger Network of Greater Cleveland is to reduce hunger by providing food and linkages to other vital services for hungry people, especially children and families, and by actively participating in a coordinated community response to people in need.

Hunger Garden

Each year the church plants a hunger garden. Our vegetable garden, located on the Shelburne side of our building, was started in 1992. In 2010, we opened the gardens up to our local community. Each gardener is responsible for their own plot and a portion of the weekly pickings will be delivered to the Heights Emergency Food Center located at Disciples Christian Church. A nice variety of herbs and vegetables are planted each year by members of the church and friends from the community. Some of the vegetables and herbs planted include Tomatoes, Collard Greens, Kale, Carrots, Summer Squashes, Lettuce, Peppers, Corn, Okra, Cabbage, Beets, Sweet Potatoes, Leeks, Onions, Bok Choy, Green Beans, Celery, Parsley, Eggplant, Basil, Sage, Cilantro, Marjoram, Tarragon and Fennel.

We donate hundreds of pounds of food to the Heights Emergency Food Center at Disciples Christian Church. We need volunteers to help plant, tend and cleanup the garden. If you are interested in helping out, contact Tobili Sam-Yellowe through the form below.

BELL RINGERS NEEDED!

handbell choirThis spring we are bringing back the Bell Choir, one of Bob Schneider’s favorite music-making ensembles here at First Baptist!

But we can’t do bell ringing justice without bell ringers. For a variety of reasons the ranks of the Bell Choir have been reduced, so we are looking for dedicated individuals, preferably who can read music (although there are wonderful bell ringers who don’t read music) and who could dedicate time for a one hour rehearsal from 6 to 7 PM each Thursday evening, and perform in a Traditional Worship Service about once a month.

We have moved the rehearsals and performances downstairs from the balcony in the back of the Sanctuary, so if climbing stairs have been holding you back, that excuse is gone! Rehearsals, with a very congenial group of ringers, are enjoyable to be with, to say the least.

bell and musicSo give joining the Bell Choir some thought. In fact, don’t even think about it. Just come on out on a Thursday evening at 6 PM and give it a try. The 100th Psalm says in part, “Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands!” That would be YOU playing bells! Give it a try. You won’t regret it!

Check the calendar to verify dates and times.

If you are interested in joining or need more information about the Handbell Choir contact Betty through the form below.
